Introduction

Anthony takes on one, maybe two decorative map commissions each year. Creating one is an involved process between you, the client, and Anthony. The work will span several months and likely require less than 10hrs of your time.

As many are commissioned as gifts for family members, he is used to creating them discretely.

Initial discussion

We will have an informal discussion about your property and objectives for the map. Likely all that is required initially is a rough boundary line marked around your property on an existing map.

The scope of the project will be agreed remotely, or in person. As a new client you are very welcome to visit our studio in Hampshire and see past examples of his work.

Quotation.

A quotation will be drawn up, specifying the map extent and surrounding area to be included.

Draft map & site visit

Once a rough working draft has been produced, Anthony will typically visit the site to gain a better understanding of the landscape. Touring the land with you and hearing about the property first hand adds great richness to the map, which is in turn distilled onto paper.

The visit also allows Anthony to check on the ground, using GPS and drones any finer details. Depending on the acreage, this may take a couple of hours. In the case of US ranch maps and larger properties, it may be several days. Anthony can be ‘left to get on with it’ on the whole, has his own off-road vehicle, and also is very happy to jump in a 4-wheeler or on horseback.

Illustrations

Where illustrations are to be featured, our artist will refer to photos supplied by yourself, or those taken by Anthony during a visit.

Creating the map

Back in the studio, the map will now really be taking shape. A draft print will be sent to you onto which any changes can be annotated by hand and sent back to the studio.

Printing

Once the map and illustrations are complete, a high quality print will be made on heavyweight, archive quality paper by a specialist printer in London. Before being securely packaged and sent to you.

Framing

If you wish for Anthony to arrange framing on your behalf, he typically works with Derek Tanous - arguably the finest traditional framer in Europe. Derek and his team, using 200 year old wooden moulds, will craft the frame to in a style of your choice. They will be mount the print and have a specialist courier deliver within the UK.

International transport will be handled by Momart. This firm of specialist art movers will make a custom case to hold the framed map, fly or arrange shipping by sea, as well as manage the necessary customs clearances. Their service can also include hanging the map at your home or chosen location.

Anthony enjoys an ongoing relationship with his clients, who often come back years down the line wishing to make changes, for example if more land is purchased, or new woodlands planted. The print can usually be removed, updated and replaced in the frame relatively easily.

Each map will have something small and personal secretly hidden within it, unbeknownst to the client. Be it a truffle in the woods, the turtle that crossed our path when we toured the ranch together, or the spaniel that flushed that perfect quail. You may never find it, but maybe the grandchildren will one day.
